Zion: we can’t get enough of this park!

The last time we were in Zion, we managed to avoid seeing anyone else for hours while navigating through Mystery canyon, even though it was the busiest day of the year. Although our initial plan of exploring slot canyons had to change due to rain, Zion is probably the best backup plan anyone can hope for.

Angel’s Landing

After a peaceful night falling asleep to gentle rain (and snow?) on the metal roof, we got a later start into the park. Our lazy morning didn’t translate into a slow day, however. As soon as we reached the trailhead, we were off, crushing miles as the views of the canyon became more and more spectacular. It only takes one photo of the Angel’s Landing view to guarantee this hike a spot on your bucket list.

There it is! It just asks to be climbed!
On the chains! Narrow and snowy!

Things slowed down a bit as we encountered crowds on the slippery snowy switchbacks, but luckily we were able to move past and up to the exciting part of the hike – the chains. With all the snow on the ground, we were extra grateful for the chain handrail that leads to the Landing, and we carefully navigated the steep path the final mile to the summit.

With incredible views in all directions, it was difficult to settle on a single place to have lunch up top! After drinking in the view as best we could, we made our way down.

The view! 100% worth it.

Emerald Pool

With time to spare, we checked out another Zion classic, Lower Emerald Pool. The trail is quick and before we knew it, we were standing behind a waterfall looking out at the glowing sandstone walls.

The spring melt meant the water was really flowing!

Red Rocks

As the weather was expected to turn again, we made our way back to LA with another stop in Red Rocks. With a forecast of “cloudy” we expected a slight chill on Purblind Pillar (5.8), but we were in for a bit of a surprise. What we initially took for chalk from climbers above was actually a light dusting of snow, which made for a magical ascent! The next morning was mild and beautiful and we flew up Physical Graffiti (5.6) before heading back toward LA.

10 days on the road in our own country was the perfect way to end our break from work. Just after our return to LA, we flew to Texas to visit family and then it was straight to the Bay area to start our new jobs… We feel so incredibly lucky that we could experience this adventure together, and we would do it all again if we could!

With the bluebonnets in Texas!
