After getting our fill at Paklenica, we continued our track south along the Adriatic. Along the way, we got spectacular lightning storms, more magical waterfalls, an ancient city, an impromptu rafting trip, and quality rock climbing!
Krka National Park
We arrived to our lakeside camp near Krka National park in the evening. After dinner, the lightning show began on cue. Storms raged on three sides of us – we happened to be in the middle, where it was totally dry. We stood outside, admiring the lightshow and breathing the charged air.
The next morning was gorgeous, and we bought our entrance tickets to the park. Yet another set of awesome Croatian waterfalls filled our morning, and once it was hot, we went for a swim in the lake beneath the largest one!
Split
That evening, we continued south to Split, where we wandered the ancient town center, and had a drink near one of the ancient gates. The old town is centered around the Diocletian palace, originally built for the Roman Emperor around the year 300. Since then, the palace has been inhabited, expanded, and fortified by different overlords, creating a marvelous blend of architectures.
Omis
In the nearby town of Omis, we rented a room with an ocean view to use as a home base for adventures. We took a raft down the river Cetina, with rapids interspersed along an otherwise lazy river, surrounded by lush vegetation. About halfway through there was a rope swing, which needed some use.
The canyon walls are also excellent for climbing, and we experienced the shortest approach ever in our climbing history, with routes a few feet from the car. The wall we were climbing was in the shade, and created an ideal calm atmosphere for an afternoon of climbing.
Thank you both for sharing your amazing travels. Your commentary and gorgeous photos make us feel part of the journey.
