Tucked away in the Alps of north Tyrol, Muttekopfhütte felt like staying in a 5 star hotel for Mel and I. The views out the bedroom window were fantastic, there was a meal service, showers… and most importantly climbing all around!
A guide whom we met at Kalymnos suggested that we stay at this hut when we told him we would be passing through Austria. Turns out he knows what he is talking about! After excitedly driving into the region surrounded by massive limestone peaks, we arrived to Imst. We parked at the base of a chairlift and enjoyed the views as the cables did the ascending work for us. Then a pleasant 30 minute hike on a trail hanging on a cliff took us to the hut. Upon arrival, we set out to do a “warm up” 4-pitch climb called “Via Cosy.” From the top of the mini-mountain surrounded by giants, I immediately knew I wanted to climb the beast in front of us, Hintere Platteinspitze. We got back to the hut in time to do a mini via ferrata along a waterfall nearby. A fun way to end the day!
At the hut, we met groups of hikers who were doing multi-hut traverses with little more than a small backpack! We realized the potential of this type of travel, hiking from hut to hut, with little worry about when to cook, where to pitch a tent, or smelling bad. Perhaps we shall save up to do something like this for an extended period in the future!
Super content with our experience there, we trekked back up to the chairlift and let it whisk us down to Bleu Lightning. We were off to the Italian Dolomites!
Reading your stories puts a smile on my face. Awesome!
Shall we? My kind of trip ! Hiking from hut to hut! Or Minshuku to Minshuku
