The Grand Canyon

After failing to see the Grand Canyon on several trips down I-10, we finally made it happen. We drove through a pretty intense dust storm followed by rain, and finally pulled into the forested camping area outside of the park in the dark.

The towers of Monument valley looked like ghosts through the dust.

We were up early the next morning and picked a hike into the canyon. Puffy clouds overhead made the lighting super dramatic as we descended the layers. From the South Kaibab trailhead, we descended to Skeleton point, then turned around. I imagine we’ll be back someday to do the full rim-to-rim trail.

A quick tour of our kitchen… breakfast anyone?

After our hike, we drove the rim, taking in the other views. Then we took our dinner to a nice viewpoint and enjoyed the show as the sun set. The dramatic sky and colors with the massive canyon as the backdrop made for one of our favorite sunsets ever!

We decided we could squeeze in another park on the way home before heading to Texas to visit Mel’s family, so we headed Northwest to Zion. On the way, we checked out the super famous bend in the Colorado River near Page, AZ. The wind was nuts, and we were getting sandblasted so we didn’t stay long. Still, it was beautiful and worth checking out. On our way out we parked at an overlook and watched a storm roll in. It reminded me of the storm we watched in Paklenica, but with a more western backdrop.

We continued westward, toward one of our favorite parks! Next stop: Zion!
