On our first stop in Southeast Asia, we stayed a couple days in Bangkok and ate (and cooked!) some of the best food of our entire trip so far. We saw some sights, like the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Chinatown, and of course the backpacker filled Khao San Road.
After the best green curry we’ve ever eaten on our first night, we discovered that a famous cooking school was just down the road from our hostel. We booked a class for the next morning, and were excited to discover that we were the only students – a private lesson! We learned the secrets to cooking our favorite dishes and ate a feast of curries, pad thai, papaya salad, spring rolls, soup, and more!
We took a boatbus down the river to the Grand Palace, which was magnificent despite the crowds. After the palace, we toured Wat Pho, home of the reclining Buddha – a super long gold Buddha in a beautiful temple complex. Sightseeing left us hungry, so we made our way to Chinatown to eat tasty vegetarian food on plastic stools in an alley with bikes zooming past.
As our friends know, it is typically pretty hard to convince us to go “out”, but having heard so much about Khao San road, we joined our hostel buddies for a night out and can confirm that folks in Bangkok know how to party. The street was reminiscent of Bourbon St. in New Orleans. We snuck away early for a late night pad-thai, and the party showed no signs of stopping.
Now that we’ve checked off the must-do Bangkok tourist sites, we look forward to spending our next visit in quieter parts of town, further from the tourist track!
